Sivasagar: Sivasagar police seized a huge quantity of stolen equipment belonging to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on April 28. According to reports, unknown miscreants stole the equipment from ONGC's Nazira office in Sivasagar.
The stolen equipment includes a number of drilling pipes and a hydraulic packer machine.
A police team led by Nazira sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) raided a dump yard and confiscated the stolen equipment. They had received specific information about this location.
A person named Hamidur Rahman happens to be the owner of this dump yard. The ONGC Nazira office had informed about this incident to the police, following which an operation was initiated.
Meanwhile, Margherita police busted an illicit oil depot at Powai Centre under Digboi Police Station and seized 5,000 litres of fuel stored in drums, suspected to be diesel, from the premises of one Dilip Singh and nearby Dhaba owned by Bhagwan Shah on February 28.
Though the duo of oil pilfers escaped under the cover of darkness, a case has been registered vide Digboi PS Case No. 36/ 2022 U/S 379/411 IPC, R/W Sec. 23 (1) (a) Petroleum Act 1934. The raid was conducted under the leadership of SDPO Margherita, Partha Pratim Das.
According to neighbours, these illegal activities had been going on for a long time even as the father of the oil thief, Bhagwan Shah, along with his employees, were sent to jail earlier.
Few oil tankers, after loading the petroleum products from the IOC Terminal Depot at Golai, allegedly off-load oil clandestinely at some obscure destinations using special devices fitted onto the tankers. Earlier, tea gardens dotted along NH37 were the bulk consumers of illicit oil.
